Brackenridge Embraces The Tiaki Promise

Brackenridge Country Retreat & Spa in Martinborough, South Wairarapa has pledged support for the Tiaki Promise, which is, in short a set of guiding principles for visitors to follow, outlining how they can positively contribute to preserving and protecting New Zealand.

The result of a collaboration between seven private and public sector organisations, namely: Tourism New Zealand, Air New Zealand, the Department of Conservation, Tourism Industry Aotearoa, Local Government New Zealand, New Zealand Maori Tourism and Tourism Holdings Ltd, Tiaki simply means ‘to care for people and place’.

“I think it is fair to say that visitors sometimes don’t recognize immediately what is important to us in New Zealand.  The Tiaki Promise makes it super simple for tourists, to help them travel safely, but also to conscientiously respect our land, our values, our people and way of life.”  said Sharon Garrett, Acting General Manager, Brackenridge Country Retreat & Spa.

Our home here in New Zealand is a truly special place and at Brackenridge we share the belief that not only the residents of New Zealand but also visitors and travellers exploring our country have a responsibility to care for it.” she said

Talking about how she learned about Tiaki, Sharon credits a Tourism New Zealand led roadshow she attended last week in Wellington.

“I was ignorant when it came to Tiaki.  It wasn’t until the Chief Executive, Stephen England-Hall of Tourism New Zealand addressed the room, that I engaged and became enlightened and knew that Brackenridge could certainly introduce The Promise to our guests.  It’s such a simple, yet rich initiative to preserve and protect New Zealand.”

“At Brackenridge, we hope this small step to actively communicate and talk about Tiaki with travellers exploring the South Wairarapa will encourage others to make the promise and share the word.”

The Tiaki Promise offers us guidance of how to care for New Zealand with a focus on five key areas:  protecting nature, keeping NZ clean, driving carefully, being prepared and showing respect.

The Tiaki Promise:

While travelling in New Zealand I will

Care for land, sea and nature, treading lightly and leaving no trace

Travel safely, showing care and consideration for all

Respect culture, travelling with an open heart and mind

Tiaki is now included on the Brackenridge Country Retreat & Spa Sustainability Policy.

Wairarapa Says ‘Yes’ to Free Drinking Water & BYOB

Brackenridge Spa Martinborough, the leading Wairarapa Day Spa is the latest business to show support for the Refill NZ initiative founded by Jill Ford and Owain John in Wellington this year, where customers are encouraged to bring their own bottle and refill it with tap water completely free.

“We wholeheartedly support the idea of providing free access to drinking water for our customers and encouraging people to use a refillable drink bottle to cut down on plastic waste and keep New Zealand beautiful.” said Mrs Sharon Garrett, Acting General Manager, Brackenridge Country Retreat & Spa.

“Like many businesses we consider ourselves to be environmentally aware and have an environmental and sustainability policy, but in truth the hard part is finding initiatives that are cost effective for small business, offer easy implementation and are simple for team members and guests to buy-in to.”

“Our Brackenridge team, loves the simplicity of the RefillNZ initiative and it dovetails in nicely with a growing trend for people to express their individuality by using their own refillable coffee cups and water bottles.” she added.

Does the initiative reduce sale of bottled water?   Sharon says that in her experience there is a lesser reliance on bottled water here compared to what she has observed in other overseas destinations. However, the impact in terms of litter remains to be a big problem globally with one million plastic bottles used worldwide every minute* and closer to home, each New Zealander is estimated to use 168 plastic bottles a year. According to RefillNZ just one third of those are recycled.

“We find that most guests are very satisfied with tap water to the extent that we don’t retail bottled still or sparkling water, it just isn’t demanded at the Day Spa. At Brackenridge Country Retreat and Spa we have our own water supply which is undergoes filtering and UV treatment to keep it safe for our guests and in addition it is regularly tested. We are not reliant on town water,” adds Sharon.

“I think most people agree that seeing discarded water bottles on the roadside, at the beach, in parks or littering walking trails, stirs a deep disappointment within us.   As a nation, each of us can use initiatives like RefillNZ to preserve this beautiful country for the future. It’s a small thing, but has the potential to drive change and educate future generations to think.” she said.

Guests of Brackenridge Spa are offered an array of beverages from a complimentary self-service refreshment zone including Green Tea infused with lime and water with an extensive beverage list including local wines available for purchase.

RefillNZ has signed up more than 80 Wellington businesses, mainly cafes, who have all said yes to offering free water bottle refills – and many more are following suit around the country.  Businesses who have adopted the practice are proudly displaying the RefillNZ sticker in their shop window, making it easy for customers to identify those involved.

“It’s wonderful to have forward-thinking businesses like Brackenridge Country Retreat and Spa joining this initiative – every participant makes a big difference!” says Owain from RefillNZ.

Open 7 days per week from 9am to 5pm the Spa is part of the popular Brackenridge Country Retreat & Spa, located just a 2-minute drive from Martinborough Village.   The Spa facilities include 4 treatment rooms including a couples’ suite, relaxation lounge with fireplace, manicure and pedicure area and retail zone. Spa guests may spend an hour or two, or make a day of it with complimentary use of the other wellness facilities including a 20-metre heated indoor salt water lap pool, fully equipped gym, outdoor heated spa pool and sun terrace.   Brackenridge Spa proudly uses Algologie, Skinstitut and the award winning Pure Fiji product ranges. Brackenridge Spa Celebrates ‘Mums ‘n’ Bubs’

Brackenridge Country Retreat & Spa, Martinborough is now offering Mums with babies an opportunity to pamper themselves in an environment that is accepting of a few grizzles, on the second Wednesday morning of each month.

“Many new mums are sleep deprived and in need of some relaxation, so we’ve created a morning once a month where they can be at ease in the Spa knowing that it’s a Mums ‘n’ Bubs morning and a few cries or grizzles is absolutely fine.” said Sharon Garrett, Spa Manager.

“This also presents a terrific opportunity to meet other mums in our relaxation lounge prior to, after or as a break in between multiple treatments.”

Because of the risks in a spa, including hot fireplace, wax pots and an unsupervised pool, toddlers and active crawlers are not welcome, explains Sharon.

“The morning is really for mums with little babies who they are not comfortable leaving with a baby sitter.” she adds. “Talking to mums and polling groups such as Wairarapa Mums on Facebook, we discovered that many mums feel uncomfortable taking their precious new baby to a salon or spa in case they disturb others.”

This got Sharon thinking.

“All of these mums prior to baby’s arrival had a regular mani/pedi, did their monthly maintenance whether that was waxing, eye brow shape, a spray tan or even a facial. So why should they miss out now just because of a new arrival? The idea is certainly not a new one to the industry, so I can’t take the credit for that, it was more a case of finding a way to make it work with our existing business.“

Mums must keep their baby with them at all times, including taking he/she into the treatment room with them for their appointment. All appointments need to be pre-booked.

Brackenridge Spa has created some new shorter treatments exclusively for this group including:

Essential Manicure or Pedicure with FREE Gel upgrade – no one with a small baby has time to wait for polish to dry – Gel is the way forward and it’s long-lasting!   (Price $39 | $49)

Essential Manicure & Pedicure Combination with FREE Gel polish (Price $75 representing a saving of $33 off normal prices)

Mini Facial (30 mins) Let us pamper your skin. We’ll start with a cleanse followed by an exfoliation to remove dull skin cells.   Our therapist will apply serum to your face and a beautiful eye cream to hydrate the delicate skin around your eyes. The facial will finish with the application of an SPF moisturiser. (Price: $45 usually $65)

Massage (30 mins) Unwind with a Swedish massage. The long, flowing movements of this massage will leave you feeling relaxed and best of all this massage is tailored to your needs – so if your back is sore we’ll focus there to give you some relief.   (Price: $45)

In addition, there is also 2-for-1 Waxing on Wednesdays (2 body parts for the price of one, with the cheaper of the two, completely free) and the current Winter promotions.

The next Mums ‘n’ Bubs morning at Brackenridge Spa will be on Wednesday 12th September from 9am to 1pm.   Mark the second Wednesday of each month in your diary.

Self-taught, Megan Campbell has been working as an artist for 20 years. During this period her work has witnessed remarkable change.   The palette used in her signature dark series of more than a decade ago has been exchanged for softer pastels used in her current work.

Megan’s work continues to explore and interpret an ongoing theme of humankind’s connection with natural environs.

“Beauty is found in the mundane and ordinary,” explains Megan

“Nature provides an ever-changing yet constant backdrop for human activity, with human presence often indicated by manmade structures.”

Over the years Megan Campbell’s work has been reviewed and documented in many published articles and books.   In the book ‘Back and Beyond – NZ Art for the Young and Curious’, author Greg O’Brien describes Megan as a Magpie, saying ‘she poozles things from all over the place’.

The relaxation lounge at Brackenridge Spa is exhibiting several of Megan’s works which are for sale.
